What are lessons learned in designing and facilitating both a massive open online course (MOOC) and a little open online course (LOOC)? Join the conversation!

As MOOCs continue to rise in popularity, debates surround the ability to sustain the model, to ensure quality, and keep learners engaged (high dropout rates abound). At the same time, the shift in instructor roles and the increase of information are cited frequently as positive sides of the MOOC.

What about the instructor who wants to provide an open class but still wants the small sense of community of a small course or an audience who needs credits for professional development activities? Enter the Little Open Online Course- or LOOC. The American College of Education offered a LOOC as a credit-granting graduate certificate in the form of a series of three courses offered to classroom teachers. Instead of adding these students to an existing course, a separate section was opened just for the LOOC students. The section is facilitated by an ACE administrator and is monitored by several others. While this course was open to anyone to register, it's unlike a MOOC in that once it started, the course isn't open for all to drop in. Instead, the course resides behind the College's LMS.

Why a LOOC instead of a MOOC? A massive offering would necessarily be non-credit and also a largely self- or peer-graded course. In the arena of teacher education, such an experience would not satisfy professional development requirements for many states. In short, our graduate student body needs credentials, credit-bearing activities, and ideally a supervised (professor-graded) experience.

The first lesson: nearly 50% attrition was obvious in the first two weeks of the first course.

Second lesson: The six students who stayed and completed the course couldn't say enough good things about it. They're currently taking the second course in the series. They've formed a small but active community in their course.

All that said, we're not out of the MOOC business. In 2013, ACE will offer a non-credit short course through Canvas Network (the MOOC platform by the Instructure Canvas learning management system). The contribution of the MOOC will offer a course that does remain open for all and invites many to participate.

In presenting this information, the presenters will share their experiences and lessons in designing and facilitating both the MOOC and the LOOC. Audience members will be asked to join the conversation, sharing their experiences as participants or facilitators in either of these course types and will be provided access to the MOOC course content and student feedback.

Participants will be invited to weight in on the following topics while creating a living comparison of MOOCs vs LOOCs:
oIssues with MOOCs/LOOCs
oMotivation factors for credit granting/non-credit granting courses
oShift in educator roles for MOOC/LOOC models
oFormat for courses (length, platform, etc)
oLevel of course's openness (Open initially but closed once it begins or always open?)
oCredit/No Credit

Participants will be provided instant access to the MOOC/LOOC chart for considerations after the presentation.
