Abstract

To close the conference, an ‘open space technology’  session will be held in Melrose 3 & 4, to give us all some space and time to develop ideas and have in-depth discussions. The session will begin with a provocation: “if it isn’t broken...”.

There are a number of possible directions this could take - including:

  • what is ‘it’?
  • if it was broken, how would we know?
  • is ‘doing nothing’ an option? what would it look like?
  • … don’t ‘fix’ it - stability and stasis
  • the state of formal educational structures and policies
  • the so-called “ed bubble”
  • the need, or otherwise, for radical technological interventions for learning and for education
  • Come for as long as you can, contribute your ideas and questions, and be part of something really special.

As the authors of the Openspaceworld wiki put it:

New in 2013: Unconference track

This track evolved from last year’s manifesto-writing unconference. Some feedback from that session included:

“great discussion”
“very interesting group process”
“this session was the most valuable of the conference”

“In many conference sessions, you may find colleagues who are more invested in reading their email than in being active participants in the sessions. Many participants asked if this type of interaction could be structured into the whole conference. This is what we want to build on during ET4Online 2013. Not only in a session at the end (though we’re planning a great one!), but woven throughout. Here’s how.

Sunset 6
Throughout the three days of the conference, Sunset 6 is a space you can use for ongoing conversations, brainstorming sessions, or other events that are organized on the fly. All we ask is that you use the space in an inclusive way by inviting other attendees to join in (or at least welcoming them if they show up). Use Twitter and/or the whiteboard to advertise what’s happening.

Along with whatever else you create, three ‘barcamp’ sessions will take place in Sunset 6, at the following times:

Tuesday 9th
10:30am-12:00pm   Barcamp session 1 (3 slots - 30 minutes each)
2:30pm - 3:20pm  Barcamp session 2 (2 slots - 25 minutes each)

Wednesday 10th
2:30pm-3:20pm  Barcamp session 3 (2 slots - 25 minutes each)

There can be as many topics and conversations during each time-slot as the room, and the number of participants who attend, makes possible.

These ‘barcamp’ sessions are open to all conference attendees, and are an opportunity to take part in discussions that are not scheduled in advance. Anyone can propose and lead a small discussion session on a topic of interest to them, provided that at least one other person wants to discuss it, too! Topics might be based on a continuation of a conversation, an area of your development, research or teaching that you want to discuss, or a new idea you’d like to kick around. Topics can be proposed in advance (on the central whiteboard), or at the start of each session.

Jen Ross Jen Ross is based in the School of Education at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where she is Programme Director of the MSc in Digital Education and part of the the Digital Cultures and Education research group. She is one of the authors of the "manifesto for teaching online", and part of the course team of the E-learning and Digital Cultures MOOC (EDCMOOC). Her research interests include online and distance education, digital futures for learning, online writing, assessment and feedback practices, and cultural and educational institutions online.
