Abstract

Extended Abstract

In 2010, Dr. Jeff Borden presented a "Best In-Track" presentation: A.R.G. - Creating Alternate Reality Games for the Classroom.

In 2014, Dr. Borden and his Center for eLearning, look to run a large-scale, simulated immersive game (S.I.G.) by which to teach and assess multiple disciplines, connecting thousands of students and teachers / subject matter experts, and promoting deep learning.

The "recipe" for this gamified experience will be showcased during this session. Based on research as well as experience, the template incorporates best in class ideas from Dr. Jane McGonigal, Dr. Karl Kapp, and others. Participants will see how the game is progressing and (potentially) be able to join in as a section. Sometimes described as MOOC v2, this S.I.G. will employ social media and rich mobile application to connect users to content, game elements, peers, and experts (including, but not limited to their own instructor).

As well, used as a template, 3 colleges and universities have already taken this recipe and created their own S.I.G. for local consumption. Part of the power of this model is how flexible it is for on-ground, hybrid, and fully online delivery, as well as the potential for integrating curricula from multiple disciplines. At the heart of the game is the creativity of the "Puppet Master" team (aka Subject Matter Expertise Leaders). As well, the open-ended nature of the game allows institutions and organizations to craft a multi-week, even multi-term experience if desired.

Can constructivistic, problem based learning, as well as gamified learning, authentic assessment, tied-to-life outcomes, and meaningful tension be performed at scale? This session hopes to answer those questions but more importantly, the S.I.G. being used as a research study hopes to prove it. We believe this alphabet soup of educational strategies and initiatives can connect learners around the globe in a real world experience teaching everything from science to journalism to political science.

So, ask yourself - do you want to play a game? If so, we can show you how to make one or join ours. We believe learning will never be the same...

The facilitators (members of the Center for eLearning) are seasoned presenters who will not leave the audience bored or unengaged. Each participant will leave the session with a usable template by which to start crafting a local or border-crossing game. As well, participants will have the opportunity to join the SIG set for Summer (2014). Finally, participants will leave with materials and resources (including the presenters) to be a helpful reference guide.
