Abstract

“Spanish Proficiency Exercises” (http://www.laits.utexas.edu/spe/index.html) is a compilation of brief video clips where native speakers of Spanish exemplify various language tasks. The materials were designed as a model for students to perform the same tasks. The object of this presentation is to demonstrate how materials are used in other ways: Grammar Review, Linguistic Analysis, Dialectology, Phonetics, Listening Comprehension, Cultural Studies, etc.

Extended Abstract

One of the characteristics of successful online materials is when users have multiple options for implementation. We see this in the video clips from “Spanish Proficiency Exercises” (http://www.laits.utexas.edu/spe/index.html), where native speakers orally model various language tasks. The tasks include transcriptions, translations, and brief grammar explanations. Because this resource provides actual speech samples from various locations throughout Latin America and Spain, they can be used for a number of new purposes: testing, grammar review, linguistic analysis, dialectology, phonetics, listening comprehension, cultural studies. These materials are available as a free open resource, without password restriction. The object of this presentation is to explore ways in which the same materials can be retooled for multiple uses.
