Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping Mastery Series

The Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping in Education Mastery Series is a series of three workshops focusing on providing foundations and skills so that you will be able to teach spatial concepts through the use of web mapping geotechnologies.

Throughout the workshops, you will explore and apply relevant research principles to understand what spatial thinking is and why to use it in your course.  You will learn how to apply the principles through the use of web mapping tools to build an exciting learning environment.
 

Successful completion of the series results in a Recognition of Mastery in Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping.

Workshop Descriptions

Each workshop is one week long. Between each workshop there will be a three-week break to give you time to complete some self-guided research and reflect on your learning.

 

 

 

Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping I: Building Foundations
Spatial thinking requires thinking about maps, about the Earth, and about spatial relationships in a purposeful way that may be new for many educators.  This workshop will provide the foundations into what spatial thinking is, why it is valuable in teaching and learning, and how you can use it to foster critical thinking, drive inquiry, encourage community connections, build career pathways, and heighten interest in learning.

Objectives

  • Analyze research related to spatial thinking and apply it to the educational environment.
  • Explore how to embed key spatial thinking themes into your instruction, including issues of scale, data quality, working with spatial data and maps, and developing the spatial thinking ‘habit of mind.’

 

Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping II: Learning Key Skills
Applying spatial thinking to education requires the use of easy-to-use yet powerful new geotechnologies, including the creation of dynamic web maps, and understanding the types of spatial data and tools available to the educator.  This workshop will focus on several major web mapping platforms and how to use them to analyze a variety of issues from local to global scale, including population change, ecoregions and biomes, energy, water, human health, land use, and business.

Objectives

  • Apply foundations learned in the first workshop to thinking about real world issues at a number of scales and across a number of themes.
  • Create, symbolize, save, and share web maps to understand how to use geotechnologies to enhance teaching and learning through content, skills, and perspectives.

 

Spatial Thinking and Web Mapping III: Solving Problems
Solving problems is the reason why geotechnologies were created in the first place.  Because some problems are local in nature, you sometimes need to gather and map your own data or use real time online data.  This workshop will focus on how to gather your own data in the field using probes, GPS receivers, and smartphones, how to access real time online data, and on how to map that data with web mapping tools.  It will also include how to communicate the results of your research by combining audio, video, photographs, and text with live web maps, and allow you the opportunity to create your own lesson using geotechnologies and a plan for implementing it.

Objectives

  • Learn how to incorporate real time and field data into your instruction using web mapping.
  • Use spatial and tabular data, tools in web mapping platforms, and the spatial perspective to better understand real world issues in a deeper way and to solve problems.
  • Create your own lesson using geotechnologies and create a plan for implementing it in the classroom.
