Online Learning Analytics: An Improvement Cycle Webinar

The higher education demand for learning analytics products and services continues to grow. According to Gartner Consulting’s hype cycle, Learning Analytics is about to enter the peak of inflated expectations. So, the 30+ existing companies are all jockeying for the position of “next silver bullet” for education, providing a product or service to graduate more students, reduce time to degree or generally help educators be more efficient. Ok, we all know hyperbole when we hear but do we really know much about analytics for online learning? To help close this gap, in June 2016, OLC released its latest edition of the Online Learning journal with a special focus on learning analytics in online learning.

The journal issue covers a variety of topics related to learning analytics from the field. We recently examined a large data set that showed online learning is NOT detrimental to your progress toward a degree. There is a lot more information so check out the article. BUT now let’s share some of the other things we are learning. For instance, how will students learn to use analytics? Does students’ uses of analytics help them self-regulate and improve? Or, what do we really know about transfer and can we find ways to use analytics to improve the student experience from community college to bachelors’ degree? Let’s just go back to the beginning, how many of us in higher education have done our homework on learning analytics? Join OLC with guest moderator Marguerite McNeal, Senior Editor at EdSurge and panelists Dr. Patsy Moskal, Jovita Vytasek, Dr. Karen Vignare, and Dr. Eric Poitras.
