“This conference was about so much more than online learning. It was about the future of education, and how to help faculty get excited about teaching in the classroom, online and hybrid environments. I left with excitement about where education is headed – and that is something that every educator needs.”– Laura Douglass, Assistant Dean, Endicott College

In an increasingly digital and social networked learning environment, students have more opportunities than ever before to explore the traditional liberal arts through innovative digital learning modalities. To remain true to our identity as an institution that cultivates and recognizes students as peer leaders in curricular and co-curricular realms, we aim to reimagine peer mentorship strategies for digital learning domains. One potential element of our approach is a summer pre-orientation program designed to empower incoming first year students with activities, tools, and mentoring to shape their identities as digital learners and peer leaders. We envision an impactful alternative pre-orientation week for a small cohort of first year students that will prepare them to become digital learning peer leaders as they advance beyond their first year. During pre-orientation, students will engage in an array of engaging and informal digital learning activities: their introduction to the campus and surrounding community will be enriched through working with Google My Maps; a digital storytelling component will help foster participants’ personal agency and voice; and they will take the first steps towards creating a digital identity that is owned and managed by them within the framework of Muhlenberg’s new Domain of One’s Own pilot project. We envision a program that will foster a community of digital learners who will train as peer leaders for digital learning initiatives at the College. Our broad goal is to establish digital literacies as a signature learning experience for Muhlenberg students. We envision designing a learning community that fosters peer leadership in digital learning will help us attract students with a love of the liberal arts and the digital, and a willingness to risk exploring how these cultures productively and creatively converge. The seeds of this design challenge were planted during the 2015 Institute for Emerging Leadership in online Learning. There, one of our team members participated in a group tasked with developing a strategy to promote digital literacies in the liberal arts. Elements of that IELOL action plan enter into this proposal, with a focus on engaging students as digital literacy ambassadors.

Although training events are scheduled around faculty/client schedules and focus on topics that are needed for those participants; there is still an issue with actually getting faculty/clients to attend training events. Pajo and Wallace (2011) identified three sets of factors – personal barriers (lack of knowledge, skills, training, role models and time), attitudinal barriers (no faith in technology, unwillingness to work with technology, concern about student access) and organizational barriers (inadequate technical support, hardware, software, instructional design, no recognition of the value of online teaching). Due to these barriers, faculty/clients resist attending non-mandatory training events. A lack of training cause many issues in the workplace, ranging from unpreparedness to inability to complete one’s job duties. Since not every faculty/client may need to come to training, making training events mandatory is not a good solution.
