Cheaters Gonna Cheat? Using multiple proctoring modalities as a deterrent against academic dishonesty.

Fostering a climate of academic integrity is a worthy goal for all of our programs. But sometimes it seems that a person who is intent on cheating will do so despite our efforts. It may be the case that when a student takes an exam for one course that they detect weaknesses in the proctoring modality and exploit that on future exams. With that in mind, is there merit in providing multiple proctoring modalities depending on the nature of the exam with some being more high stakes than others?

In the 2016 Annual Proctoring Practices Survey we collected perceptions of students and faculty about which proctoring modalities are the strongest deterrents to cheating.  You are invited to participate in this Focus Group during which we will share the results of the proctoring survey and engage participants in reflection on managing multiple proctoring modalities and practices that are deterrents to cheating on exams.

A $100 Amazon Gift card will be awarded to a randomly selected participant.  You may also review the survey results prior to the session by following this link to prompt your reflection prior to the session

Virtual Assistance Labs and Just-In-Time-Online Proactive Feedback: Reducing Statistics Anxiety In Graduate Students
Date: Thursday, April 21st
Time: 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM
Conference Session: Concurrent Session 4
Session Modality: Virtual
Lead Presenter: Carla Thompson (University of West Florida)
Track: N/A
Location: Nottoway (4th Floor)
Position: 1
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

The move from 16-week face-to-face lecture/laboratory classes to 8-week fully online graduate educational statistics courses at the University of West Florida initiated a new challenge for faculty and students. The challenge focused on concerns related to students’ statistics anxiety levels. Statistics courses are often viewed by graduate education students as anxiety producing, frightening, difficult, and impossible for successful completion. Students often postpone or avoid taking required statistics courses until late in their programs. The need to explore enhanced instructional options for faculty working with statistics anxious graduate students within an asynchronous teaching environment prompted the implementation of a two-fold statistics-friendly online approach: (1) an interactive technology approach involving virtual assistance laboratory (VAL) case studies using real-world statistical problems and (2) a just-in-time-online (JITO) personal proactive personal feedback approach involving daily reassuring consistent feedback from faculty members via online discussion threads. Significant reductions in average statistics anxiety levels of graduate students were found to empirically relate to specific types of positive feedback from faculty members. In addition, empirical evidence supporting the use of virtual case studies as beneficial for reducing students’ statistics anxiety levels and increasing students’ satisfaction levels was documented in support of this effort as an effective practice.

The Walden Junto Model: Supporting Faculty Communities of Practice
Date: Thursday, April 21st
Time: 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM
Conference Session: Concurrent Session 4
Session Modality: Virtual
Lead Presenter: Laurie Bedford (Walden University)
Co-presenter: Laurel Walsh (Walden University)
Track: N/A
Location: Nottoway (4th Floor)
Position: 2
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

Faculty development for asynchronous instructors is often delivered to large groups via a webinar or self-paced tutorial. For more complex instructional tasks, the traditional model is insufficiently robust, and it does not allow for reflection or resource dissemination. To address professional development gaps in offerings, the Center for Faculty Excellence developed the Walden Junto model, designed to meet the expressed interest among Walden faculty to share ideas with like-minded individuals in a structured setting. The Walden Junto model is based on Wenger’s (1998) concept of a community of practice in that it (1) focuses on a clear need for knowledge sharing; (2) incorporates a paradigm that supports the building of trusting relationships; and (3) supports the development of skills necessary for successful practice. Walden University as an institution supports the Walden Junto by providing key support elements include supporting the structure for University wide-involvement, soliciting faculty interest and input, supporting collaboration across disciplines, and encouraging ongoing learning through reflection and professional discourse.

In 2015, 8 Juntos were offered and served 121 faculty.

Brief Abstract:

Increasingly student learning needs to extend beyond the classroom.  Students are often emerging from high school without the active learning experiences that creates depth of understanding.  The ability to integrate academic and social spheres by leveraging an ecosystem that drives social engagement both in and outside the classroom can shape the student experience, drive engagement and improve retention.  In this session we’ll use Schoology’s next generation LMS as the backdrop to understanding how today’s students and faculty can come together in a highly engaging and immersive digital environment to connect, communicate, and collaborate.

Track: N/A
Location: Rhythms II (2nd Floor)
Position: 1
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

The purpose of this proposal is to determine if there is an opportunity to improve student engagement and learning in asynchronous online discussion boards by optimizing the number of students in each discussion.  Research suggests that the optimal discussion group size ranges from approximately 4 – 12 students (Berry 2008; Schellens & Valcke, 2006), yet many of our University’s general education courses contain approximately 25 – 35 students.  In addition, students and faculty have expressed an ongoing desire for more individualized interaction and instruction in the discussion boards.  Our idea for solving this challenge is to implement cohort-specific online discussion experiences in our high-enrollment courses.  This solution design would require the collaboration of an interdisciplinary University team, including faculty, instructional designers, assessment analysts, and learning technology specialists.  We are optimistic that the successful implementation of cohort-specific online discussions would positively impact the teaching and learning experience for our students and faculty.

The first Title III grant Northland Pioneer College (NPC) implemented to improve its distance learning environment was the Equitable Access to Gainful Experiences (EAGLE).  This 5 year project faced many challenges including personnel changes in IT, unforeseen regulatory obstacles, cost, training, and faculty frustration.  Some of the solutions implemented in this project were additional time built into the schedule, alternatives in the planning, seeking alternative resources, and promoting faculty technology literacy.  The second Title III grant, Technology to Advance Learning Outcomes at Northland (TALON), will likely see new challenges that call for a solution design as the implementation of the project expands the college’s distance learning environment to the high school level across an expansive territory.

Bridging the Engagement Gap for Distance Students in Resident College Courses Through Telerobotics
Date: Thursday, April 21st
Time: 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM
Conference Session: Concurrent Session 6
Session Modality: No
Lead Presenter: Michael Griffith (University of Arizona)
Track: N/A
Location: Rhythms II (2nd Floor)
Position: 3
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

Traditional telepresence classrooms are expensive to implement and often require technical and instructional support to successfully translate an instructor's pedagogy. There is often an engagement gap when comparing the level of participation and curiosity exhibited by the distant student and their resident peers. A second issue is that students enrolled in a fully supported telepresent class are often enrolled in other courses that don’t take place in rooms equipped for their needs. Our team is exploring a mix of technologies that will allow distance students to engage with their instructor, peers, and course material in a standard classroom using an inexpensive, portable telerobotics platform. We hope to close the engagement gap by placing these robots among the resident students and in the direct line-of-sight of the instructor thus reducing distraction for the resident students and allowing the instructor to react to non-verbal cues exhibited by the distance students.

Project-Based, Competency-Based Curriculum Design at College for America at Southern New Hampshire University

Session Modality: No
Lead Presenter: Heidi Wilkes (College for America at Southern New Hampshire University)
Co-presenter: Kaitlin LeMoine (College for America at Southern New Hampshire University)
Track: N/A
Location: Maurepas (3rd Floor)
Position: 1
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

College for America (CfA) at Southern New Hampshire University aims to make a college degree achievable for every working adult by offering programs that are online, competency-based, project-based and directly applicable in the workplace. CfA’s curriculum is designed so that adult learners develop specific competencies through the completion of various workplace-relevant projects. CfA Projects are unique because they are designed around groups of competencies and set in fictional, yet realistic organizations. The organizations, each developed with a complete cast of characters, appear throughout the curriculum to provide continuity and familiar settings in which students demonstrate mastery of the competencies. (See supporting document “Drip&Dry.jpg.”) CfA Projects require students to assume roles in different scenarios and produce realistic workplace deliverables. An example might be an assignment from a supervisor to analyze customer survey data. The project-based curriculum approach is very effective with adult learners who already have life and employment experience, as it allows them to utilize what they already know and then learn what they need to know in order to master competencies embedded in a given project. This approach encourages a whole population of students who might not otherwise return to college to do so in a way that feels relevant to their lives and experiences.

Retrofitting and Proactivity for Accessibility in Online Courses

Lead Presenter: Erin Blauvelt (Excelsior College)
Co-presenter: Kimberly Barss (Excelsior College)
Track: N/A
Location: Maurepas (3rd Floor)
Position: 2
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

As an institution whose mission states that it “provides educational opportunity to adult learners with an emphasis on those historically underrepresented in higher education”, Excelsior College wants all of their students to succeed. One particular group of students that requires a unique set of means to succeed is those with disabilities. In early 2012, the College decided to shift its approach to serving students with disabilities from a reactive position to a proactive stance. Historically, we have outfitted elements of courses to meet the needs of an individual student after they have been approved for an accommodation through our Disability Services Office. This was a process that could take a long time to complete, putting the student behind in their coursework. By taking a proactive approach to serving these students, we made the decision to edit our entire library of courses, which began as approximately 435 but has since grown, to include several accessibility standards so that they would be ready when students needed them. We also incorporated these same standards into our course development and revision process, so that all newly developed courses from July 2014 and beyond are also accessible. This does not eliminate the need for specific accommodations to be added to courses, as each student’s needs are different, however in most cases this greatly decreases the time that it takes to provide all accommodations to the student and incorporates Universal Design guidelines to help all of our students. Many of the accessibility standards that we are implementing not only assist our students with disabilities, but also positively impact our students without disabilities. Quality Matters Standard 8 states that it “incorporates the principles of Universal Design for Learning”, which increases quality for all students. Inclusion of universal design principles in courses can help students who use English as a Second Language, those with environmental barriers, and those with diverse learning styles.

Lead Presenter: Chelsea Barnett (Western Governors University)
Co-presenters: Kurt Gunnell ( Western Governors University), Jill Fellow (Western Governors University)
Track: N/A
Location: Rhythms I (2nd Floor)
Position: 1
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

The online version of a course called Leadership and Communication is offered to new and struggling students at Western Governors University to help students build hyper-bonded communities and influence personal growth within the affective domain. The course was designed to support the university’s goals to increase: first-term retention, second-term retention, course completion, and graduation rates. The guiding principle of the course is that student success starts with both social support and self-reflective awareness, and that these two experiences prepare students to weather the challenges and demands of pursuing a college degree.

Our effective practice and intentional design of the course replicates the most impactful, community-based aspects of the traditional classroom but instead of requiring a brick and mortar classroom, places instructors and students on webcam in a virtual classroom that also utilizes breakout rooms for team time, activities, and one-on-one sharing. We assert that the visual representation of the person on camera allows students to interpret body language, emotions, and other nonverbal indicators that contribute to deeper and more authentic personal connections.

The course uses a blended collaboration of synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities that effectively accomplish the course learning objectives while conserving the time and resources of our adult learners, who typically have competing demands.

Brief Abstract:

The Walden University Writing Center (WUWC) is an entirely online writing center serving an online university primarily composed of graduate students. Both Walden students and faculty report writing skills to be a barrier of success. The WUWC provides numerous resources for students to develop their writing skills. Recently the WUWC developed self-paced writing modules as an additional resource for students to improve their writing. These open-access, self-paced modules curate already-created WUWC resources and add interactive activities, quizzes, and a certificate of completion. Data the WUWC has collected indicate that student knowledge increases on average 95% after taking a module, and students report being more confident with the module’s topic. Walden faculty are also enthusiastic about the modules, directing students to the modules and incorporating them into their classrooms. To date over 500 students have accessed the modules. The WUWC’s self-paced modules are available for any student to complete and any faculty can use them with their students, creating an effective way for students to develop their writing skills.

Location: Rhythms II (2nd Floor)
Position: 1
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

We were tasked with creating an online introduction to entrepreneurship class for undergraduates to explore their interest. One key element of the course that needed to be replicated was impromptu speaking – an essential part of being an entrepreneur – and how we would accomplish a true impromptu experience asynchronously. Our proposed solution is an application that will pull randomly from a bank of pre-populated prompts or topics for each student, allow us to set the preparation time and time limit for the response, automatically submit the video and display the submissions in a gallery-type space that also allows for commenting and feedback.

Here is a link to the video demo series we created for other folks at our institution about CaptureStudio: https://youtu.be/4gw16i2hHKs?list=PL9_vTvhweUFuZpbqLt3ZD8nXrGCEPZnd6

Using Student Data as a Map, Not a Target
Date: Friday, April 22nd
Time: 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM
Conference Session: Concurrent Session 9
Session Modality: No
Lead Presenter: Mac Adkins (SmarterServices)
Co-presenter: Wendi Prater (Lone Star College)
Track: N/A
Location: Rhythms II (2nd Floor)
Position: 2
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

Schools often use demographic, behavioral and non-cognitive data about students to “target” at-risk learners. This is good, but it is somewhat parallel to Google Maps using the real time location data from your phone (behavioral data) coupled with factors from your profile (demographic data) added to your driving tendencies (non-cognitive data) and then calling your phone to tell you that you are lost. What is most practical is for Google Maps to aggregate your location, speed and other data to tell you which way to turn just at the right moment to find the best restaurant. How can schools similarly use student data to guide them along the path of persistence?

Digital Discoveries: Creating Pathways to Digital Peer Leadership in the Liberal Arts
Date: Friday, April 22nd
Time: 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM
Conference Session: Concurrent Session 9
Session Modality: No
Lead Presenter: Lora Taub (Muhlenberg College)
Co-presenters: Kathy Harring (Muhlenberg College), Sean Miller (Muhlenberg College), Thomas Sciarrino (Muhlenberg College), Anthony Dalton (Muhlenberg College)
Track: N/A
Location: Rhythms II (2nd Floor)
Position: 3
Session Duration: 45min
Brief Abstract:

Like many liberal arts institutions, Muhlenberg College is exploring the role of the digital in our mission, goals, and practices. We believe that digital spaces, pedagogies, and tools can amplify our liberal arts mission and values, and support deep relationships between teaching and learning, appreciation for diverse ways of knowing, and an education that prepares students for citizenship and life long learning. At the heart of our student-centered environment is a nationally recognized peer-mentor model. With blended and online learning in its infancy at the College, we are only just beginning to explore how to remix this model for our emerging digital learning initiatives. The innovation challenge we propose is to design the framework of a robust and sustainable peer-education network for blended and online learning environments. Our goal is to create an innovative peer education model that empowers students to develop the relationships, skills, and competencies the need to excel as leaders in digital learning contexts.
