Assessment, Evaluation & Achievement of Learning Outcomes: Our Journey in Integrating Multiple Program Level Criteria (accreditation standards, program outcomes, other specific competencies or requirements) into an Individual Course

Concurrent Session 1

Session Materials

Brief Abstract

Do you have lots of courses and lots of faculty teaching them? How do you know if each student is learning the same thing? Share our journey in developing a plan for assessment, evaluation and documentation of student learning at the course, program, and accreditation levels.

Extended Abstract

Join Miami University nursing faculty and E-learning leadership, in an interactive presentation as we share our experience in developing and implementing a plan for assessment, evaluation and documentation of multiple criteria and outcomes at the individual course and program levels. Assessment, evaluation and achievement of specific outcomes are not only “buzz words,” but key in meeting national program requirements and providing an exceptional education to our students. However, developing a plan for integrating multiple criteria into individual courses across a curriculum is daunting for most of us. Where do I start? What do I include? How do I access this information easily when it is needed to support assessment and evaluation, and thus achievement of the varied outcomes/requirements inherent our programs when accreditors, our institutions or other entities require it?

Many of us have numerous faculty members, living across the country, teaching various courses across our curricula and thus we require a specific plan informing all involved of activities, assignments, rubrics for grading and specific places for this documentation so that it is easily accessible when needed. Faculty are then informed of how these course activities promote eventual program outcomes or other required criteria and thus the importance of carefully following the guidelines provided in the course.

We will share our journey through this process using one specific course as an example, providing you the opportunity to begin developing your course and program plan and providing the framework needed to complete the process. We will also discuss using the outcomes feature within Canvas to start mapping these criteria to specific assignments for easy access when needed. This negates any additional cost or the burden of buying and learning to use an additional program, as well as duplication of efforts. We will also share our next steps in this process.

Participants will be provided a grid in which they can enter their own specific criteria supporting assessment, evaluation and documentation of outcomes, as well as where/how their course/program is addressing each outcome. Direction in organizing the grid, how to incorporate specific activities toward meeting the eventual outcomes into beginning, mid-level and advanced courses will be addressed. This direction will be provided in a manner empowering all participants teaching in a variety of disciplines, to apply the principles to their program. Attendees can participate via interactive polling and a backchannel for questions.

Outcomes for this session:

  • Examine elements involved in assessment, evaluation and documentation of learner’s meeting multiple criteria in an individual course and across a curriculum

  • Identify a specific process for developing an individualized plan/map for integrating multiple criteria in an individual course and across a curriculum

  • Examine barriers and strategies to overcome them in developing a plan/map for integrating multiple criteria in an individual course and across a curriculum

  • Explore a specific framework for completing the process following the workshop

  • Demonstrate how the Outcomes feature in Canvas enables one to start mapping these criteria to specific assignments

Examine elements involved in assessment, evaluation and documentation of learner’s meeting multiple criteria in an individual course and across a curriculum

Provide an example of a program outcome, a BSN Essential, a Cultural Competency, a specific course objective, a learning assessment aimed at meeting these, and a rubric that tells us that it is met. Describe/provide an example of a learning objective in a course at the beginning, mid-level and advanced level and how the assignment changes to address the different criteria at different levels.

Identify a specific process for developing an individualized plan for integrating multiple criteria in an individual course and across a curriculum

Describe and show the grid and what different criteria go into each one - criteria of different types across the top (PO, BSN E, CC, Experiential L, AW, ICP) then place individual courses on the left. In each “box” place B, M, A for level of LO and assessment for each, along with the Module in which the assessment is located, and a number that designates the assignment number within the module (B, 3.2).

Examine barriers and strategies to overcome them in developing a map for integrating multiple criteria in an individual course and across a curriculum

Time, organization, patience, willingness to go back and revisit, developing an overall plan for which courses you see as addressing which PO, BSN E, CC and then what level you expect the LO and assessment to be. Then look at the individual courses, and at which level, and which module you will place the assessments. Be sure that your assignment & rubric tell you if the LO, PO, etc. has been addressed/met.

Explore a specific framework for completing the process following the workshop

Discuss how to make the framework/grid work for individual programs with a variety of criteria.

Demonstrate how the Outcomes feature in Canvas enables you to start mapping these criteria to specific assignments

Describe the Canvas Outcomes feature and how to use it to follow a specific course/assignment when needed
