Brief Abstract

Considering building a custom LMS solution? Join us as we talk about our experiences developing a custom home-grown LMS to meet the diverse learning needs of our organization. We’ll discuss some of the considerations we took into account, talk about pros and cons we’ve encountered, and provide tips and best practices that could help inform your decision.

Presenters

Sing is currently the Manager of Learning Design and Solutions at the Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness. At the Clearinghouse, he manages a team of learning designers, production specialists, and developers to produce researched-based educational solutions to help improve the lives of United States military members and their families. His areas of expertise include instructional design, educational technology, faculty development, adult learning, student engagement, active learning, MOOCs, and the development of STEM-related courses. Sing has previously presented presenter at various education conferences, including the OLC Accelerate, Learning Solutions, and the Penn State Teaching and Learning with Technology Symposium.

Considering building a custom LMS solution? Before you jump in feet first, come chat with us about our experiences developing a custom home-grown LMS solution! The Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness at Penn State did just that (and in 6 months to boot) to meet the diverse needs of our organization.

In this session, we will talk about how/why we came to the decision to custom build, the planning and considerations that went into the decision, and our experiences getting it built out and spun up to go live within 6 months of making the decision. We will also talk about what we see as positives and pain points of custom building a LMS, as well as offer participants tips and best practices as they consider building their own LMS.
