Brief Abstract

Designed for faculty and designers who are not in formal leadership positions, this workshop encourages attendees to grow ideas, lead from where they are, and increase innovation at their institutions. Fill your toolkit with strategies and tools for supporting ideas with research, pilot planning, evaluation, and achieving buy-in. 


Penny has designed online courses since 1997. She is currently a senior instructional designer for the Penn State World Campus. Her research interests include student perspectives of quality and how this impacts the design practice; and the use of games and simulations in online instruction. She has presented at various regional, national, and international conferences and is currently chair of the Quality Matters Instructional Designers Association. She recently co-authored the book MindMeld: Micro-Collaboration between eLearning Designers and Instructor Experts with Jon Aleckson.
As the Associate Vice President for Distance Learning at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas, longtime Kansas native Eddie Andreo leads the Instructional Design processes and administers the online campus component of the College. He facilitates technology-rich instruction and learning through collaborative curricular innovation, faculty training, and technical support. Eddie has over 13 years of Higher Education experience teaching online in subjects such as Business Ethics, Small Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Business Mathematics and Educational Technology. He’s an expert in Instructional Design practices on several LMS platforms including WebCT, ANGEL, Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard. Mr. Andreo is a nationally recognized Certified Facilitator for the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop in both Face-to-Face and Online and has trained over 1000 instructors in Quality Matters Professional Development workshops in this past year alone. He is also a Certified Peer and Master Reviewer for Quality Matters, Certified Blackboard GUI Administrator, and has presented at national conferences such as Blackboard World, Blackboard’s Institutional Performance Conference (IPC), Summer Institute on Distance Learning and Instructional Technology (SIDLIT), and the QM Annual Conference. Eddie obtained his Bachelor of Science from Newman University, holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Baker University and has completed additional certifications in Advanced Excellence in eLearning.

The theme for the workshop is: "I have an idea. Now what do I do with it?"

Designed for faculty and designers who are not in formal leadership positions, this workshop encourages attendees to grow ideas, lead from where they are, and increase innovation at their institutions. Presenters will share a toolkit containing strategies, tools, templates, and processes for communicating and increasing innovation. The resources to be provided draw from known best practices in design thinking, agile development, rapid prototyping, iterative evaluation, and informal leadership.

Attendees will work together to build and practice the following skills during the workshop:

1. Initial Evaluation: Putting ideas to paper

  • Why are you interested?
  • What are the key functions, potential uses, and/or value that you see?

2. Support the Idea: Back it up with resources and research

  • What are others doing?
  • What does the research say?
  • Why is this a good idea?

3. Plan a Pilot: Iterative design and evaluation

  • What do you plan to investigate, how, and for how long?
  • With whom? Who are the key players?
  • How will you know it's successful?

4. Write a Proposal: Request time and resources

  • What are the elements of a successful proposal?
  • How do administrators and managers see your idea?

5. Sell the Idea: Get buy-in

  • What is the difference between sharing and selling?
  • How can I push ideas up the chain?
  • How can you build interest and get buy-in?
