Brief Abstract

Join us in Tennessee Lobby A at 12:00pm for a wrap-up of OLC/MERLOT Innovate 2018!  Mingle with your fellow attendees as OLC CEO Kathleen Ives and MERLOT Executive Director Gerry Hanley bid you adieu and lead the celebration and concluding remarks.  2018 Conference Co-Chairs Jessica Knott and Angela Gunder, along with the winner of our keynote 'StarSearch', will present closing comments on the importance of 'failing forward' in online teaching and learning in 2018 and beyond.

Kathleen S. Ives, D.M. has worked in online technology for over 20 years and is currently the Online Learning Consortium's Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director where she oversees the organization's strategic direction. Dr. Ives assumes this leadership role after serving as interim CEO and Executive Director since October 2013. Additionally, she serves as faculty for the Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning (sponsored by Penn State and OLC) and on the Leadership Advisory Board for the Center for Learning Innovations & Customized Knowledge Solutions (CLICKS). Formerly, Dr. Ives oversaw all forms of alternative instruction at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA (distance learning, accelerated programming). She serves as adjunct faculty for University of Phoenix, Denver-based American Sentinel University, and Bay State College in Boston. Dr. Ives began her career at CBS and helped to develop the service that evolved into Prodigy. She then spent fourteen years designing and implementing consumer online information services, first at AT&T and then at Verizon where she spearheaded the development of the nation's first online Yellow Pages product, now called superpages.com. Dr. Ives has degrees in communication, communication management, and organizational leadership from the University of California at Davis, the University of Southern California, Annenberg School of Communication, and the University of Phoenix-Online, respectively.
Gerard L. Hanley Ph.D. is the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Technology Services and the Executive Director of MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching, www.merlot.org) for the California State University, Office of the Chancellor. At the CSU, Gerry oversees the management of systemwide academic technology initiatives including digital library services, course redesign with technology, affordable learning solutions, accessible technology, and Cal State Online, serving CSU’s 23 campuses and 479,000 students. At MERLOT, he directs the development and sustainability of the international consortium and technology strategy to provide open educational services to improve teaching and learning. He is the Director of SkillsCommons, the US Department of Labor’s open repository of educational resources for workforce development. Gerry’s previous positions include professor of psychology, director of faculty development, and director of strategy planning at CSU, Long Beach.
Angela Gunder serves as Director of Instructional Design and Curriculum Development for the Office of Digital Learning at The University of Arizona. Angela came into instructional design rather circuitously, helming large-scale site designs as webmaster for The City College of New York, the honors college at ASU, and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).  Her over fifteen year career as a designer for higher education informs her instructional design practice, where she leverages her expertise in usability, visual communication, programming, and standards-based online learning. Angela holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Fine Art from Fordham University, and a M.Ed. in Education Technology from Arizona State University.  Prior to her position at UA, she was a member of NOVA’s instructional design team, supporting over 23,000 students in 550 unique courses.   Angela is an Associate Editor for the Teacher Education Board of MERLOT, and a Quality Matters certified peer reviewer and online facilitator.  Her research interests include technology for second language acquisition, open educational resources, and emerging technology to promote digital literacy. A voracious culinary nerd, Angela spends her free time composing, cooking and photographing original recipes for her food blog.
Dr. Jessica Knott is the Learning Design Manager for MSU Information Technology and the MSU Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology. She has worked in information technology since 1998, spanning the public and academic sectors. She has been active in collaborating with colleagues nationwide in planning conferences for the Online Learning Consortium, and she is an editor for the Hybrid Pedagogy Journal (http://www.hybridpedagogy.com).
