Providing Student Analytics From A Live Online Class

Brief Abstract

We will demonstrate analytical reports that we can provide from a live online class.


Fred Dixon is the project manager for BigBlueButton, an open source web conferencing system for online learning. The goal of the project is to enable remote students to have a high-quality online learning experience. Fred also moonlights as the CEO of Blindside Networks.

Extended Abstract

When an instructor holds an online class using BigBlueButton (such as from within in Canvas, Schoology, Jenzabar, Moodle or other LMS that integrate BigBlueButton), a common question is "How engaged were students during the online class?"

We will demonstrate our recent success in extracting analytical data from the recording that includes attendance, participation, and engagement (i.e. response to polls) to provide the instructor with data they can use to gauge and grade students participation (or lack thereof).

Our goal is to provide data to the instructor so they can improve their online class. Feedback is welcome on our demonstration!
