Brief Abstract

This presentation will focus on how online programs at colleges and universities can develop and use a Faculty Resource Center (FRC) within the LMS to provide faculty and staff the skills they need to ensure student success. The presentation will demonstrate Post University’s and Charter Oak State College's (FRCs) and show the features and benefits that allow for easy tracking of faculty development coursework and mandated training modules. This demonstration will provide the audience with a powerful connection tool to faculty, staff, and administrators. 



Dr. Dana Wilkie, Assistant Provost at Post University provides direct supervision and support of Instructional Design, the Course Materials Coordinator, and the Digital Resource Specialist. She leads the effort to drive and enhance the Electronic Course Materials (ECMs) initiative. She coordinates course (re)development with Instructional Design and the Deans. Prior to her role at Post University, Dr. Wilkie served as the Interim Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Associate Dean of Adjunct Faculty at Westchester Community College. She collaborated with faculty to develop effective online and blended courses. She implemented quality assurance measures for course development through Open SUNY (OSCQR) peer-based course review. Prior to her role at Westchester Community College, Dr. Wilkie served as Dean of Academic Affairs at Charter Oak State College, located in New Britain, Connecticut where she supervised and lead the distance learning program growth and development.

Additional Authors

Kristi Newgarden, Ph.D. earned a doctorate in Educational Technology from the University of Connecticut in 2015. She has been the Assistant Director of Instructional Design for Charter Oak State College, a fully online institution, since January of 2017. Kristi is leading initiatives in Competency Based Education and Open Educational Resources. Current design interests include integration of game-based learning and augmented and virtual realities. Prior to her work for Charter Oak, Kristi served for 18 years as director of the University of Connecticut American English Language Institute (UCAELI). In her research, she applies the perspectives of Ecological Psychology, Dialogicality and Distributed Cognition.

Extended Abstract

This presentation will walk participants through the process to propose and implement a virtual Faculty Resource Center through the LMS at their institution. To support exciting and effective teaching and learning at Post University, a virtual Faculty Resource Center (FRC) was initiated and launched in March 2017 to provide consultation, programs, training, and support for online faculty in the form of workshops, lunch and learn sessions, learning modules, and webinars. The FRC hosts a series of Faculty Exchange Sessions.  The series promotes open and frank discussions about effective teaching approaches. 

A clearly developed mission statement was developed to guide the FRC for future enhancements. The mission of the FRC is to support a new way of teaching and learning, including creative approaches to faculty-student engagement, course design and implementation, and the seamless integration of technology into the academic environment. The FRC is faculty-focused, a collaborative endeavor to promote effective teaching, with special emphasis on technology to enhance face-to-face and online courses. 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Compose a mission statement for the development of a Faculty Resource Center (FRC).
  2. Describe types of learning modules that support faculty as educators and scholars.
  3. Promote the enhancement of teaching and learning environments across different teaching modalities.
  4. Demonstrate the Faculty Resource Center (FRC) activities that reflect a commitment to strengthening the support for teaching and learning with technology.

Engaging the Audience:

  1. The presenter will start off with an interactive online poll to engage participants' perceptions of online faculty development and connectedness to their institution.
  2. Participants will break into 4 small groups and be asked to define three online faculty development requirements at their institutions and report out.
  3. Participants will be given handouts of the presentation to follow along with the presenter.
