Extended Abstract

How to re-use your classroom assignments effectively in an online environment. A step-by-step approach to transforming your in-class assignment for the online environment. Using an example of an in-class discussion we will map the components of the in-class assignment to an online assignment. Participants will then break into small groups and use a worksheet to dissect an in-class assignment they might use into components and discuss how this could be achieved online. We then step through the process of scaffolding and aligning the assignment and complete the alignment worksheet.  Finally we discuss ways in which we can modify the assignment for the online environment, the types of engagement, and tools that can be used to increase student engagement.

Participants will be able to:

  • Complete an exercise on dissecting an in-class assignment into components and discuss how these components might be adapted for an online environment.
  • Complete an alignment worksheet to build a similar assignment online.
  • Identify the benefits of using a tool like VoiceThread for increasing engagement in an online discussion.
