Brief Abstract

Join us for the Global Quality Summit (GQS) as part of the Accelerate conference. In the GQS, you will have opportunities to learn, discuss and share best practices in online and digital learning with high level representatives from global institutions.

In this interactive and informative summit, our speakers will discuss how quality in digital learning is addressed in their region of the world. You will then have an opportunity to collaborate with other higher education professionals, to identify solutions to current problems and future trends in digital learning.

This event takes place at our OLC Accelerate conference in Orlando on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, 8:30am – 11:30am and is included in your OLC Accelerate 2018 conference registration.

Presenters

Jennifer Mathes is the Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Online Learning Consortium. In this role, she provides leadership in researching, scoping, managing, and evaluating key projects, programs, and customized solutions that are aligned with OLC’s Consulting Services domestically and internationally. Dr. Mathes has more than 20 years of experience in both public and private higher education where she has supported digital learning initiatives since she taught her first online course in 1997. She has been instrumental in working with start-up initiatives as well as leading growth in institutions with an existing technology enhanced program. In addition, she is co-editor of the OLC Quality Scorecard Handbook: Criteria for Excellence in Blended Learning Programs (2017) and Quality Course Teaching and Instructional Practice Handbook (To be released 2017). Dr. Mathes holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she wrote her dissertation on “Predictors for Student Success in Online Education.” She also has earned a Master of Science degree in Business Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications from Illinois State University.
Yueling Huang is the assistant dean and director of the Online Education Research and Application Center of the College of Online and Continuing Education at Southwest University in China. Dr. Yueling Huang acquired his Ed.D degree in Education in the Faculty of Education, and Master Degree in Computer Science and Technology at the College of Computer Science at Southwest University. Having been working at the College of Online and Continuing Education since its establishment in 2001, Dr. Huang is one of the founding employers and has witnessed all the critical institutional transformations of online education both at the university level and at the national level. Dr. Huang's research interest focuses on context based student learning effectiveness assessment, big data minding and analysis and new technologies integrated in online education. Dr. Huang has published almost 10 first-authored high quality academic articles in the top-tier journals in the field of online and continuing education in China.
As Senior Academic Director of Member Services and Partnerships at Quality Matters, Dr. Gao oversees QM’s Member Services for Higher Education, K-12 Secondary Education, Continuing and Professional Education programs as well as QM's external and international outreach and collaborations. With a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction and a concentration on instructional design and educational technology, Dr Gao has over 25 years experience in higher education both in China and USA as faculty, instructional designer, LMS manager, and online education administrator. Dr Gao believes quality course and program design facilitates effective instruction, promotes student engagement, and lays the foundation for student success.

The presenters will share their experience, strategies, opportunities & challenges, in initiating and developing collaborations in Saudi Arabia to establish a quality assurance process for e-learning and distance education in the Arabic-speaking region.

Session 2:  Defining and Measuring Quality in Online and and Continuing Education:  A Cross-Cultural Case in Southwest China 

Presenter:  Yueling Huang (Southwest University)

This paper employed cross-cultural perspective and mixed method approach to analyze how an exemplary higher education institution in Southwest China redefined online and continuing education, constructed a unique quality measurement framework, and explored quality improvement pathway to respond to the nation-wide quality oriented transformation of online education.
