A Message from the Conference Co-Chairs
Wowee zowee! As we settle back into our work at our home institutions, we are compelled to reflect on all the community, learning, sharing and growth we experienced at OLC Innovate 2019. Connections were forged, relationships deepened, and gazillions of neurons were plasticized! Here are some of our favorite moments and occurrences:
- Delving deep into learning experiences and networking in Pre-Conference workshops and the Leadership Network
- Rick Franklin playing live blues to accompany the awards ceremony
- Loads of fun and music in the evening gatherings, from Game Night to IDEA Night, to going out on the town
- Community College and HBCU Summits
- Ranger Program family-style lunch, Talk-abouts tours, and Slack connections
- Thought-provoking keynotes from Tressie McMillan-Cottom and Manoush Zomorodi
- Campfire stories from the community, Angela Gibson, Michael Caulfield, Joshua Steele, Brian Kane and Ben Scragg
- The Innovation Studio, Designers in Residence, and reflection station
- A challenging digital learning-based Escape Room from which only a few teams escaped!
- OLC Live, broadcasting extra interviews behind the scenes, including keynote Manoush Zomorodi, virtual attendees, OLC Board members and many more (See 2019 Playlist!)
- Gorgeous views of the mountains – especially from the outdoor steamy infinity pool!
- Fire pits galore!
- Sooo many amazing and interesting sessions
- Speed Networking Lounge!
- Wellness and self-care oriented space and activities with morning yoga and meditation in the Serenity Lodge
While a conference is a finite event with respect to its planning and programming, we have found that the community around OLC Innovate stays engaged and committed to building relationships with one another – especially once the conference ends. So we encourage you to stay committed to the community. Revisit the #OLCInnovate hashtag on Twitter, pour back through the Slack channel, and dig through that stack of business cards you’ve already stuffed in that second-from-the-bottom office drawer! The work of education is challenging, slow, and often difficult, but we are in this together, so help make this conference live on through the relationships you forged while there.
We are grateful for your time and energy in Denver (and virtually), and we are committed to the idea that we can move mountains in education together! If you need any relational connecting, support, or just want to talk with a friend, reach out to us (Clark and Ben). And we’ll look forward to seeing you in Chicago next spring for Innovate 2020!

Mediasite Captures the Dynamic Energy of OLC Innovate 2019 with Live-Streamed Video & Recordings
OLC Innovate 2019 is over, but many conversations onsite and virtually centered around the especially dynamic energy and enthusiasm of this event, which was captured for our continued enjoyment thanks to the power of video. OLC selected Sonic Foundry to be the national webcasting partner for the event in Denver, CO in early April.
Sonic Foundry’s Mediasite Events team streamed OLC Innovate 2019 to the online audience. In the OLC Live! Virtual Hub online attendees could converse with presenters and their peers and watch sessions in real-time.
Through the live webcasts of more than 80 conference sessions, OLC engaged more than 1,000 online attendees who were unable to make it to Denver, but still chose to participate – virtually! They posed questions to presenters and, along with the 1,250 people who attended the conference on-site, can now watch these sessions on-demand on any device for one full year.
OLC Innovate is a joint, annual conference presented by OLC and MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching), a program of the California State University System that provides free and open online teaching, learning and faculty development services. Academic leaders, faculty and administrators came together to discuss education innovation, including emerging technologies, how to incorporate intelligent learning management systems and designing blended classrooms.
Mediasite Events helps the world’s top companies harness the power of video to stream their events globally and engage attendees wherever they are. With the most experienced project managers and the most rock-solid technology in the industry, Mediasite Events is the go-to solution for the world’s largest companies and continuing educational conferences.
Mediasite Events is powered by the award-winning Mediasite Video Platform, trusted by more than 4,900 educational institutions, corporations, health organizations and government entities in 65 countries. Learn more at www.mediasite.com/events and @mediasite.
