HBCU Affordable Learning Summit 2017

Practitioners Summit for Advancing Affordable Learning Solutions and Quality Online Education for HBCUs at the OLC/MERLOT INNOVATE Conference in April 2017

The Southern University System, California State University, and MERLOT will share practices, strategies, and resources for reducing the costs of instructional materials for students, making higher education more affordable for more students in Historically Black Universities (HBCUs) in the United States and Higher Education Institutions in Africa (HEIA). Leaders from Southern University and California State University/MERLOT will facilitate a series of sessions and workshops that will be embedded in the annual INNOVATE conference co-sponsored by the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) and MERLOT in New Orleans, April 5-7, 2017. HBCU and HEIA participants will develop plans that they will be able to deploy within their own institutions, customized to the needs and goals of their own communities. The HBCU and HEIA participants will also recommend strategies for OLC and MERLOT to advance and sustain support for HBCUs and HEIAs in their implementation of affordable learning solutions and online education.

Leveraging HBCU leadership in Louisiana:

There are 105 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States, all of which will be invited to participate in the symposium. Six of these minority institutions are located in Louisiana, including the Southern University System (SUS) with three campuses, Grambling State University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University, enabling convenient participation in the OLC/MERLOT conference by these institutions.   Southern University System has recently launched their Affordable Learning Solutions initiative (www.suol4ed.org) and will share their strategies for planning and implementing this initiative with their fellow HBCU colleagues. By INNOVATE 2017, they will be able to report on the early stages of their program. The summit would include Southern University’s and CSU-MERLOT’s presentations and workshops on how HBCU’s can design and implement their locally customized and sustainable AL$ program. The faculty and the leadership of these institutions will facilitate the sessions and workshops at the conference.

The symposium intends to engage higher education institutions in Africa (HEIA) through two mechanisms. First, through the HBCUs international Programs to leverage the Innovate venue to establish or reinforce existing partnerships between HBCU/HEIA.  It is also our intention to engage HEIAs through the MERLOT Africa Network (MAN), an outreach program enabling institutional access to global resources for eLearning capacity building and global networking with peers.

The program will build on lessons learned from a similar venue of the same name previously sponsored by the Online Learning Consortium, the OLC HBCU Leadership Summit for Online Learning, held during the 20th OLC international conference 2014. The summit would be the 1st annual meeting of HBCU’s at INNOVATE where HBCU’s would present and share their AL$ strategies and outcomes, along with other online education initiatives that emerge as priorities for HBCU’s.  The summit will be blended within the INNOVATE conference which will provide forums for informative and stimulating presentations and discussions on strategies that can assist in the creation of a sustainable partnerships in online learning environments as well as explore issues related to faculty and student engagement and raising awareness about the next generation courseware.

Format of Practitioners Summit for HBCUs:

Participants at the summit would register for INNOVATE 2017 and blend their participation in the summit with the rest of the OLC INNOVATE conference. There will be no additional fee for participation in the summit.
