Extended Abstract

Virtual reality has been actively implemented into classroom as a new way to engage students. You have read so many amazing stories about using virtual reality (VR) in education. You might be thinking, wow, that’s so cool. I want to bring it to my campus/class. But where to start? This workshop will share examples, and discuss tips and best practices on these important questions: What’s the best way to introduce VR to my campus? How to effectively integrate it into my classroom? I teach online, can I use it? What VR tools are available for my subject?

This workshop will showcase successful models for integrating VR into campus/class and walk participants through each stage. We will present working examples and discuss strategies that virtual reality can be implemented into your own campus and/or classrooms. These will include project examples from different disciplines:

  • English Education

  • STEM Education

  • Science Education

  • Social Work

  • Nursing

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Business

  • History

Fun interactive component will be included to engage participants to experience the VR projects and understand the design process thoroughly. Participants will also have opportunities to work in groups to explore free VR apps and learn how you and your students can create VR experiences for your classroom. Participants will be asked to develop your own implementation plan to outline how you might integrate VR into your own campus/class.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to

  • Identify potential opportunities and challenges that virtual reality may bring to your campus/class

  • Adapt a model for integrating VR into campus and classrooms in use at SJSU

  • Identify meaningful VR tools and apps for education use

  • Develop an action plan to implement VR on your campus and classes

A resource website will be designed with information to scaffold participants to build their own VR implementation plan when they return to their institutions.
