Brief Abstract

The Online Learning Consortium (OLC) provides an array of professional development offerings focused on leadership development in the digital teaching and learning space. Current and emerging leaders can take advantage of both online and blended programs that are designed to enhance the skills and knowledge administrators need in the ever-changing higher education landscape. Come meet with Jennifer Paloma Rafferty, Director of the Institute for Professional Development, and Elisabeth Stucklen, Instructional Designer at OLC, to learn about which OLC program is right for you at this stage of your professional trajectory. Jennifer and Elisabeth will provide attendees with an overview of the Institute for Emerging Leaders in Online Learning Program (IELOL) as well as the Leadership in Online Learning Mastery Series.

Presenters

Elisabeth Stucklen is an instructional designer in the Online Learning Consortium's Institute for Professional Development, where she provides course design/production and facilitation support for the Mastery Series and Instructional Designer Certificate Programs and serves as the instructional designer in the Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning (IELOL) program. She has worked in online higher education and instructional design for over 16 years. Prior to joining OLC, she worked as the senior instructional designer at Mount Washington College (MWC) in Manchester, NH, where she was responsible for creating new online courses, providing training and support for faculty, and assisting the director in monitoring the course development process. Before MWC, she worked at Lesley University providing professional development and course design assistance to faculty. In addition to her role with the OLC, Elisabeth also teaches online for Brandeis University in their Masters in Learning Experience Design program and has served as a mentor in the Educause ID2ID cross-institutional peer mentoring program for the instructional designer. Elisabeth holds a Masters of Science in Instructional Design and Technology from Emporia State University and a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication Technology from Lesley University.
Jennifer Paloma Rafferty ( Pronouns: she, her, hers) provides leadership in researching, scoping, managing, and evaluating a full range of professional development solutions for multiple audiences within the OLC Institute for Professional Development. She has worked since 1999 supporting online learning initiatives in higher education and in the adult basic education system. Jennifer assumed this role at OLC after working for over seven years as an instructional designer at Quinnipiac University Online in Hamden, Connecticut. During her time at Quinnipiac University, Jennifer was also responsible for spearheading the development of the first online Spanish course at the University. She continues to teach this specialized curriculum for the School of Nursing and presents both nationally and internationally on the topic of online foreign language instruction. Prior to working in higher education, Jennifer was the project manager for the Massachusetts Adult Basic Education Distance Learning Project. In this role, she collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Education and Project IDEAL to research and identify best practices for distance learning programs serving adult GED and ESL students. Jennifer holds a Masters of Education in Instructional Design from UMASS Boston, a Masters of Arts in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an undergraduate degree in Romance Languages from Mount Holyoke College.

Extended Abstract

The Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning (IELOL) is a unique blended learning leadership development program sponsored by the Online Learning Consortium and a partner institution TBD for the 2021 cohort. Coming up on its 13th year, IELOL serves the development needs of emerging leaders responsible for a variety of digital learning initiatives in higher education. IELOL participants work with colleagues from around the world to explore and understand both the opportunities and barriers to advancing local and global online learning. Program graduates join a growing network of online leaders in higher education focused on improving and advancing the impact of digital learning on all aspects and formats of education.

The Leadership in Online Learning Mastery Series focuses on organizational structure, policy and common funding models related to online learning programming at the institutional level. Through a series of modules, you will explore topics relevant to online administrators, using evidence-based research into best practices to help you establish and stabilize strategic, manageable growth of online learning initiatives within your institution. You will analyze various models employed by successful institutions to determine which model is best suited to the needs of your institution. Along with other university administrators, you will share ideas about emerging issues in online education, including standards for credit hours, state authorization requirements, security, and intellectual property. Finally, you will align your institution’s mission, goals, and values with a plan for implementing successful online learning programs, with consideration for budgeting and finance.
