Brief Abstract

What if you had the tools to draw students into a learning adventure of their choosing? The Hy-Flex modality allows faculty to creatively customize the student learning environment by leveraging student-centered teaching. This method involves creative assignments and multiple pathways to promote diverse student learning experiences while maintaining rigor.

Presenters

Cherie has worked at Indiana University Kokomo since 2000 as the Sr. Instructional Strategies Specialist in the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment . As an instructional designer and technologist she primarily consults with resident and adjunct faculty on course design, effective use of instructional technologies, active learning techniques, the Etext Initiative, Collaboration Technologies, and Next Generation Technologies. She works closely with faculty on the design and creation of quality online and hybrid courses and facilitates the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshops and the Online Learning Strategies courses on the Kokomo campus. In addition she facilitates New Adjunct and New Faculty Orientations and Learning Communities. She also teaches online as an adjunct professor for the School of Sciences.
Julia Sanders is the Associate Director of Collaborative Academic Programs at Indiana University. With 20+ years in secondary and higher education, Julia facilitates collaboration and meaningful communication with faculty and campus administration regarding curriculum, policy, implementation, and delivery of online programs. She directs the development of the curriculum for online degrees to ensure course quality and application of best practices.

The Hy-Flex modality allows faculty to creatively customize the student learning environment by leveraging student-centered teaching. This method involves creative assignments and multiple pathways to promote diverse student learning experiences while maintaining rigor.

We will discuss ways in which instructors can purposefully leverage technology and course activities to enrich student learning in a blended learning environment. We will share examples from multiple campuses and present practical examples of how this can be achieved for your students. Participants will leave with tips and resources to build Hy-Flex elements into their courses. Don’t let a pandemic break your class. Instead, create a flexible class that will bend with the times.
