Less Talk, More Action! Sinclair Community College’s step-by-step guide to executing a successful CBE program
Concurrent Session 4

Brief Abstract
Attendees will learn how to create a viable plan for CBE at their own institutions, based on lessons learned from Sinclair Community College’s four years of CBE offerings.
Extended Abstract
The bright promise of competency-based education in addressing the skills gap and accelerating college completion has spurred a dynamic national conversation. Much of the conversation surrounding CBE though, focuses on high-level strategy and policy. While such considerations are the critical first step, many institutions seek practical advice on, what next? What programs are the best fit for CBE development? What are strategies for faculty buy-in? How do I deliver on the promise of flexible courses in a semester format? How can I use technology to support the CBE classroom?
Join us as we discuss the lessons learned from Sinclair’s four years of CBE program offerings, in various disciplines such as IT, Management and STEM fields. Whether creating new CBE programs, or adapting existing programs, attendees will benefit from guided exercises in creating a viable plan for CBE at their own institutions.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identification of potential courses or programs for CBE development
- Identification of campus and technology resources for use in development
- Plan for fostering buy-in from faculty and staff
- How to use the LMS in course development and data analytics for student success
