Brief Abstract

The call for a quality education that provides equity and inclusive excellence can only be effected through providing students with a positive learning experience and a faculty community that understands the needs of its learners. Belhaven University has spent the past year intensely focused on providing students with an exceptional user experience within the LMS by giving attention to the engagement of the learners as wells as the development of a data-driven faculty development system. Initial results indicate an increase in student retention.  

Presenters

Aaron's career has been focused on education. He served in K-12 education for several years both as a teacher and principal. In higher education, he has participated in the areas of program development, faculty development, and online learning as well as adjunct faculty. He currently serves as the Associate Vice President of Online Studies at Belhaven University, overseeing the integrity of the online program which includes data management, LMS innovations, and faculty development and monitoring.

The call for a quality education that provides equity and inclusive excellence can only be effected through providing students with a positive learning experience and a faculty community that understands the needs of its learners. Belhaven University has spent the past year intensely focused on providing students with an exceptional user experience within the LMS by giving attention to the engagement of the learners as wells as the development of a data-driven faculty development system.

Belhaven University has created homegrown tools and partnered with Aspiredu, Tutor.com and SmarterMeasure to reach struggling learners and increase student retention. Special attention was given to Gateway courses to implement support resources to help students throughout their educational journey.

Understanding the significance of the role of adjunct faculty in higher education compelled Belhaven University to make marked efforts to develop systems to ensure quality service to its 250 adjunct faculty. A Faculty Orientation was developed, and a data-driven faculty development initiative has begun. The initiative includes regular communication with faculty observations and targeted faculty development.  

Initial data shows that these initiatives have been making an impact at Belhaven University. This session will provide an overview of strategies for reaching out to struggling students. It will also provide insight into how to create a scalable data-driven faculty development program. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on faculty needs as well as the impact a robust faculty development program can have on the student experience.
