Brief Abstract

Digital leaders are guiding initiatives at traditional academic institutions and non-profits, attempting to maintain vision through crises, developing new partnerships and approaches within the private sector, and working to establish policies and regulations within government. Focusing on digital strategy to promote institutional transformation, this fireside chat comprises one of a selection of special sessions held at OLC Innovate 2022 for online, blended, and digital learning leaders.

Angela Gunder is the Chief Academic Officer and VP of Learning for the Online Learning Consortium. In this role, she is responsible for gathering, curating, and leveraging the intellectual capital created by and disseminated through OLC. Prior to her position at the OLC, Angela served as the Director of Instructional Design & Curriculum Development for the Office of Digital Learning, managing and mentoring the team that builds the fully-online programs for The University of Arizona. Her over fifteen-year career as a designer for higher education informs her instructional design practice, where she leverages her expertise in web design, usability, visual communication, programming, and standards-based online learning. She is an Associate Editor for the Teacher Education Board of MERLOT, and the recipient of the 2018 MERLOT Distinguished Service Award, the organization’s highest honor. She is also the recipient of two Online Learning Consortium Effective Practice Awards for the creation of a framework for personal learning networks, and for the creation of exploratory installations of education technology, respectively. In 2019, Dr. Gunder was named an OLC Fellow for her dedication to service, innovation, and scholarship in support of student success in online learning. Her research interests include open educational practices, digital literacies, narrative in online course design, and emerging technology for second language acquisition. She holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Fine Art from Fordham University, a M.Ed. in Education Technology from Arizona State University. Angela completed her Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies at The University of Arizona, where in 2020 she was named an Erasmus Scholar by the College of Education for her commitment to the college, the university and to the community. Dr. Vincent Del Casino is Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and San Jose State University. Previously, he was Vice President for Academic Initiatives and Student Success. He oversaw programmatic and curricular development for online learning and played a leadership in the expansion of digital learning experiences on campus more broadly. He also oversees the University of Arizona’s 100% Engagement Program. He also oversaw four core areas of student success and retention programming at the university, including C.A.T.S. Academic Center, the Salt Center, Think Tank, and Academic Success and Achievement. Before taking up his post as Vice President, Dr. Del Casino was Vice Provost for Digital Learning and Student Engagement/Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (2014-2017) and Associate Dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (2011-2014) at the University of Arizona. He also is a Professor of Geography and Development with interests in social and cultural geography, health geography, geographic thought and history, sexuality studies, HIV/AIDS, and sexual and health politics in Southeast Asia and the United States. He has collectively published five single-authored, co-authored, and edited books as well as over 30 articles and invited book chapters. He has held grants from the Metrans Transportation Center of the University of Southern California and the University-wide AIDS Research Foundation of the University of California and been part of collaborative research funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services administration (SAMSHA). He has held a Visiting Research Fellowship at The Australian National University and given numerous conference presentations and invited lectures at a number of national and international venues. Digital leaders are guiding initiatives at traditional academic institutions and non-profits, attempting to maintain vision through crises, developing new partnerships and approaches within the private sector, and working to establish policies and regulations within government. We see ever increasing demand for cross-sector collaborations led by digital leaders across an increasingly diverse educational landscape. Join us for OLC’s spring leadership network event, where we bring together digital leaders from academics, non-profits, and the private sector to discuss online, blended, and digital learning strategy in times of great change. Focusing on digital strategy to promote institutional transformation, this fireside chat comprises one of a selection of special sessions held at OLC Innovate 2022 for online, blended, and digital learning leaders as a teaser for the 2022 Leadership Network Symposium to be held onsite at OLC Accelerate 2022 on November 14 in Orlando, Florida.
