Sustaining Open Cultures in MSIs: Sharing Strategies to Build Institutional Capacities

The hands of black people in the center hold each other to unite

We cordially invite you to the HBCU Summit, a groundbreaking event dedicated to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and culturally relevant open educational resources (OER) to promote affordable learning solutions.

This summit focused on enhancing education opportunities for underrepresented communities within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through diversity, inclusion, and equity-driven initiatives.

Summit Themes

  • AI-Enabled Affordable Education: Explore the role of AI in creating scalable and affordable learning solutions that cater to a diverse student population, minimizing barriers to access for underrepresented students.
  • Culturally Relevant and Accessible OER: Explore the importance of OER that are not only culturally responsive but also part of a wider strategy to provide cost-effective educational resources.
  • Closing the Digital Equity Gap: Examine strategies for ensuring that all students, particularly those from marginalized communities, have access to the necessary technology and digital resources in a cost-effective manner.
  • Innovative Responses to Educational Challenges:  Share lessons learned from the pandemic about maintaining continuity in affordable and culturally sensitive education during times of crisis.
  • Empowering HBCU Consortia:  Discuss the potential of consortium models to pool resources and expertise, thereby enhancing the capacity for delivering affordable, high-quality education to underrepresented groups.

Be a Catalyst for Change

This summit represents an opportunity for HBCUs to be at the forefront of advocating for and implementing affordable learning solutions that empower underrepresented communities, thereby enriching the overall educational landscape.

Who Should Attend?

The summit welcomes HBCU faculty, staff, students, and all advocates for affordable education who are dedicated to the success of underrepresented communities in higher education.

Instructional designers have long championed the intentional use of technology to support the strengths of faculty and learners, and now Artificial Intelligence affords instructional designers capacity to support more of their own strategic, critical work.

Join us for an immersive afternoon at the Instructional Design Summit, an integral part of the 2024 Innovate Conference as we discuss, workshop, and showcase the possibilities of AI in design learning experiences. This summit is specially designed for current and aspiring instructional designers, as well as stakeholders involved in learning design projects.

1:15 PM – 2:15 PM: Panel Discussion – The Role of AI in Course Design; Presenters: Tawnya Means, Susan Adams, and Benjamin Deaton

Delve into the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of instructional design. Our panel of experts will discuss how AI is reshaping the way courses are conceived, designed, and delivered. Explore the benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations of integrating AI into teaching and learning environments.

2:30 PM – 3:15 PM: Workshop – AI as an Instructional Design Associate; Presenters: Heidi Echols and Jordan Register

Engage in an interactive workshop session that demonstrates how AI can serve as an associate in instructional design work. This hands-on session will provide practical insights into leveraging AI for tasks such as content creation, data analysis, and personalized learning experiences. Participants will learn how to effectively integrate AI tools into their design workflow and how to interrogate teaching and learning through new lenses with more time now using AI as a coach and a helper to see our gaps.

3:30 PM – 4:15 PM: ID x AI Project Showcase; Presenters: Sean Nufer and Veronica Estrada

Cap off the summit with our Project Showcase, where attendees have the opportunity to present and discuss their innovative projects in instructional design, especially those incorporating AI. This will be an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning and gaining feedback from a community of like-minded professionals.

The Instructional Design Summit is included in your All Access Pass onsite conference registration at no additional fee. All current and aspiring Instructional Designers or stakeholders who collaborate on learning design projects and are attending the conference in Denver are encouraged to attend. Attendees will leave with valuable insights and strategies for creating engaging and effective digital learning experiences as part of a community of educators within your context.

Please RSVP for the Instructional Design Summit when you register for the conference All Access Pass.
