Workshop: “Using Hispanic Dances to Teach Hispanic Culture, Diversity, Tolerance & Inclusion Online. An interactive and practical approach to Hispanic culture.”

Brief Abstract
In this session/workshop you will learn about a way of teaching Hispanic culture and diversity online or face to face, using dance as a focus (flamenco and Afro-Cuban dance). We use two different approaches (Social Learning/Sociological Approach and Task-Based Learning Approach/Language for Specific Purposes), which have common learning outcomes. Attendees learn about diversity, tolerance, inclusion, and social justice, while learning about the dance and its social context. Attendees also learn some specific Spanish vocabulary through the dance and dance movements, as well as learning about Hispanic culture and respect for a different culture. By extension we all learn to be more tolerant and accepting of different cultures and ways of living. A brief post-task activity will be conducted to see what attendees learned from the session (4 questions to be answered in the session).

Extended Abstract
Workshop: “Using Hispanic Dances to Teach Hispanic Culture, Diversity, Tolerance & Inclusion Online. An interactive and practical approach to Hispanic culture.”
Our plan is to briefly introduce two approaches to teach the different dances, and then have an interactive and practical session where attendees participate in learning culture, diversity, and tolerance through these dances. We will divide the workshop in two dances, Tango Flamenco, and Afro-Cuban dance. These two dances will help attendees learn about the origin and country of the dance, the meaning of the steps and movements, how to execute the steps correctly, and some specific Spanish vocabulary used to teach and learn these dances. Attendees will be able to remember phrases and specific words in Spanish by practicing the dance movements in this session. At the same time, attendees will immerse themselves in a different culture from their own and learn from it. They will learn about diversity and tolerance for another way of living through dance and music.
Attendees will:
- Learn specific Spanish language related to Hispanic dances (we explain the language and metaphors used for steps).
- Learn about the culture and context of the dances which helps learn about diversity.
- Learn respect, social justice, and tolerance for diversity through Hispanic dances and music. When you participate in a dance from another culture, you are immersing yourself in that different culture, and experience it firsthand.
- Learn about respect for diversity and inclusion through Hispanic dances and music. Accepting other ways of living is a way of being tolerant and accepting of other cultures and diversity.
