About  |  Schedule

The OLC Instructional Design Summit is back and ready to rock! Join us for compelling questions, spirited conversation, expert panelists, and action-oriented breakout sessions. The Summit will be divided into three segments: a 45 minute conversation with our panelists, followed by a 45 minute breakout session focused on creating solutions to the biggest problems in our field. We’ll wrap up the third session with raffle prizes, a reflection activity, and report outs from the previous breakout group session. Come equipped with some great ideas and be ready to learn and create with colleagues from across the globe!

Join us in this half-day virtual event where we will discuss current and emerging questions and engage in multiple dialogues around the four corners of an ID’s life: designing learning experiences, collaborating with faculty, leveraging educational technology, and integrating new approaches and theories into our work. Take part in topical group discussions with fellow participants, learn from expert panelists, network with other participants who share the passion for the work we do, and walk away with a collaborative document created by the summit participants. We hope you can join us!

You can also join in on the conversations via Twitter by following #OLCIDSUMMIT.

Virtual Summit Schedule

The Instructional Design Summit is open to all OLC Accelerate 2021 participants and held in three parts on Wednesday, September 22. Attendees can attend one or all of the sessions, and are encouraged to bring colleagues from their leadership teams to attend as a connected cohort across the event.

All Sessions are held in Eastern Daylight Time Zone (EDT)

Part 1: September 22, 3:00pm – 3:45pm US EDT

Instructional Designers as Change Agents through Faculty Development

As instructional designers, we go to great lengths to design and develop high-quality courses.  But how can we support (especially adjunct) faculty’s efforts to continuously improve their teaching skills to match course quality? In this session, we explore JHU engineering school’s approach to faculty development: the Faculty Forward Academy.

Presenter:

  • Dr. Olysha Magruder, Assistant Director – Center for Learning Design and Technology, Johns Hopkins University – Whiting School of Engineering

Part 2: September 22, 4:15pm – 5:00pm US EDT

Course Design and Revisions Considerations for Large-Enrollment Courses

Many colleges and universities have been considering the implementation of large-enrollment online courses to meet the online education demands. For course designers, these large-enrollment courses can present certain challenges. What role does learning analytics and the new RSI (regular and substantive interaction) play in designing and revising large enrollment courses? Join the discussion to better understand the challenges and to explore possible strategies for addressing them.

Moderator

  • Christine Paige, Director of Instructional Design, SUNY Empire State College

Presenters:

  • Alena Rodick, Interim Assistant Director of Instructional Design, SUNY Empire State College

Part 3: September 22, 5:30pm – 6:15pm US EDT

Moving Students, Faculty, Courses, and Programs from Remote to Online

In 2020, faculty quickly shifted to a remote learning model. Instructional Designers helped support and manage this quick transition, but how will the ID field manage the faculty, student, course, and program transformation from remote to online learning? During this panel, we will discuss how to plan for a future post-pandemic.

  • Christine Paige, Director of Instructional Design, SUNY Empire State College
  • Edward Queen, Senior Instructional Designer, Johns Hopkins University – Whiting School of Engineering

Onsite Meet-up

Like all good learning experiences, OLC is very interested in amplifying the ways that we can engage with new ideas and the community across different modalities. As such, the onsite meetups are meant to be a direct connection to the findings, ideation, and collaborations happening in the virtual summits two weeks prior. You are encouraged to attend any and all parts of the summits and the meetups, with no requirement to attend the summit to make the most of the meetups, and vice versa. We encourage you to explore both spaces as you can to contribute to the shaping of new collaborations and future calls to action for this special interest group. Excited to access both spaces? Register for an All-Access Pass to be sure to gain access to attend both!

The Instructional Design Summit Meet-up at the onsite conference at Gaylord National (Washington D.C. area) will be held on Wednesday, October 6.

Onsite Meet-ups are located in the Speed Networking Lounge (Maryland Ballroom Exhibit Hall).

Instructional Design Summit Meet-up: Designing (and Networking) For Fun and Collaboration: October 6, 9:45am – 10:45am US EDT

Not sure what to do between the morning’s Instructional Design workshop sessions? Connect with your fellow instructional design colleagues in this 45 minute networking break that will include lightweight, collaborative activities.  Come as you are and make new connections, while using your super power ID skills to complete fun, mini design challenges. Whether you are looking for a brain break, looking for new ideas, or looking for new colleagues, this meet-up was designed with you in mind!
