Developing Structure-Based, Construct-Valid Online Training

Brief Abstract
The online learning market is polluted with content-based noise and “lakes” of big data. As educators and instructional designers, we can find ourselves overwhelmed and at times unable to make use of the volume of data. This workshop will use the story of a partnership project between two higher education institutions (Le Moyne Institute and the Syracuse University Graduate School) to share usable techniques of a structure-based approach to generate and make sense of data to monitor, revise, and enhance learning outcomes for any learning environment.

The online learning market is polluted with content-based noise. Institutions and vendors have clogged virtual learning environments with endless offerings on infinite topics that have generated "lakes" of big data. As educators and instructional designers, we can find ourselves overwhelmed and at times unable to make use of the mass volume of data flowing seemingly everywhere. This workshop will use the story of a partnership project between two higher education institutions (Le Moyne Institute and the Syracuse University Graduate School) to share usable techniques of a structure-based approach to generate and make sense of data to monitor, revise, and enhance learning outcomes for any learning environment.
Block 1 (60 minutes)
- Project overview; initial goal, identified problem set-ups, planned solution set-ups
- Designing structure-based learning tasks; universal learning constructs
- Generating interpretable, relevant, and comparable online formative assessment o Hands-on activity; construct snapping
- Discussion and questions Break (30 minutes)
Block 2 (60 minutes)
- Project review; clarified goal, actual problem set-ups, implemented solution set-ups
- Designing structure-based templates; high-engagement immersive branching
- Generating interpretable, relevant, and comparable online summative assessment
- Hands-on activity; basic simulation storyboarding o Discussion and questions

- understand a framing technique for developing immersive branching
