Brief Abstract

Come to this workshop to get started using OSCQR, the OLC Effective Practice award-winning online course quality design rubric and process. Participants will use OSCQR to complete their own online course review and earn the OSCQR Reviewer badge. The OSCQR rubric & dashboard are openly licensed. Participants will take away tools to apply to their own systematic online course quality review initiatives.

Rob Piorkowski brings to the position of Assistant Director of Online Learning for Open SUNY a meaningful understanding of campus culture, faculty development, instructional design, and online teaching. He is the principal designer of Open SUNY’s Instructional Designer Certificate Program, for which he drew input from SUNY’s instructional designer community. Currently, he is focusing on the implementation of COTE efforts for continuous improvement in online course quality (Course Supports) and online teaching skills (Competency Development). Rob is also an adjunct instructor for Cayuga Community College, where he has been teaching French online for 9 years.

Extended Abstract

Open SUNY has developed an online course design rubric and process that addresses the instructional design and accessibility of an online course that is openly licensed for anyone to use and adapt. The Online Learning Consortium (OLC)  adopted OSCQR as their Online Course Quality Scorecard in November 2016. The aim of the of the OLC OSCQR Rubric and Process is to support continuous improvements to the quality and accessibility of online courses, while also providing an approach to collect data that can be used to inform faculty development, and support large-scale online course design review and refresh efforts systematically and consistently.

In this workshop we will share the OLC OSCQR process and rubric with participants and discuss how it can be used to systematically review and refresh the instructional design and accessibility of online courses and programs. Participants will be led through the rubric as they review an online course. You can come prepared to review an online course of your own, or use one of ours. Participants should bring a laptop and be able to access the online course that they would like to review.  

Workshop Objectives - In this workshop you will:

  • You will receive an overview of the OLC OSCQR self-assessment rubric and discuss and practice how to apply the standards.
  • You will see how the OSCQR rubric creates an online course action plan for the continuous improvement of an online course.
  • Access the OLC OSCQR rubric (pdf).
  • You will initiate the review of an online course using the rubric and complete the review as time allows.
  • Become an Open SUNY Fellow in the "Friend of SUNY" role so we can continue the conversation started in the session.
  • You earn the OSCQR Reviewer badge and will leave the session prepared to conduct online course reviews with the OSCQR rubric.
  • Join the OSCQR usergroup.

We invite collaboration and feedback on the use of OSCQR and we will also solicit input and suggestions from the participants on the next areas of the rubric to be developed.

OSCQR approaches online course review and refresh as a professional development exercise, to guide faculty in their understanding of improving course design from an effective practices perspective, rather than as a course evaluation. An Action Plan is automatically generated by the course review process that presents recommendations for course design improvements based on the review, and assists in prioritization of course revisions based on the estimated time to make those improvements. The rubric also provides suggestions for course design improvements for each standard that can be selected from a menu of options by each reviewer to supplement reviewer feedback. The rubric can be customized. Standards can be added, edited, and /or eliminated. There is no license fee for use of the rubric. It is shared with a creative Creative Commons license: CC-BY 4.0 US. Because the OSCQR Rubric is licensed under Creative Commons, and the Dashboard is licensed under LGPL, the entire process can be shared, used by anyone with no cost, and can be customized to address individual campus environments.
