Inspired by local cafes and coffee shops, OLC’s Café and Mercantile is designed as a space for community to gather around music, food, and all things local. With each conference, our community travels from location to location. Through the OLC Café and Mercantile, we are able to connect with local arts and change-makers with the collective goals of critically situating our work in a sense of place and advancing more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and socially just learning environments. Throughout the conference, we welcome a variety of local artists as they “take the stage” to perform and engage in storytelling with us. We also invite OLC community members to hop on mic or the stage to share their own talents.

This year, we are excited to connect you through the Café and Mercantile to a variety of local artists and community activists. Both Artstillery and Artitude have been in the Dallas area for years, and both share a mission not just to bring arts to needed communities, but to have artists in those communities find a place to nurture their talents and perform. By raising up stories of marginalized groups in the Dallas area, both organizations hope to affect change through the power of story. The performers stem from both groups and include time to talk with some of the creators about their process. Over the past 5-10 years, the arts community in Dallas celebrates these diverse voices that are appearing throughout the area to tell their stories in their own authentic ways.
