What to do in and around town

There is a lot to do in and around Montclair.
Here are a few ideas and links to get you started. Make a few days of it!

Join us for one or all of these optional activities during the conference:

Campus Healthy Walk
Wednesday after the Collaborate Wrap Up, take this opportunity to stretch your legs with a health walk around campus. One lap is about 1/4 of a mile and has two wonderful spots to take pictures.

Game Night
Emerging Learning Design is pleased to host its first Game Night. Join us Wednesday at 4:30pm, or select the Campus Tour and Site Visit route that concludes at the Game Night. Come and play your favorite games, or learn new ones. We’ll have favorite board games, educational games, card games, and video games. Come to play, watch others play, or hang out and have a good time. This event is free and open to all conference attendees.

After Party
What better way to end the conference than with colleagues, new friends, and an open bar (and food!).  Enjoy beer, wine, soft drinks and sparkling water from the bar, and a hot and cold Hors D’Oeuvre station – including cheese & crackers, quesadillas, crudite, coconut shrimp, and spinach and feta phyllo. Join special guests AJ Kelton, Deb Keyek-Franssen, Elliott King, Jennifer Mathes, and Teresa Slobuski. The After Party runs from Friday 2pm-3:30pm.  Must be 21 or older to attend. Cost: $33

Please be sure to RSVP for each of these optional activities during the registration process.

If you’re looking for an eclectic arts scene mixed with world cuisine and a funky downtown, Montclair is the place for you.

  • Since 1952, the Avis Campbell Gardens – a 7,000-square-foot floral oasis – have been a place of solitude and beauty.
  • Art lovers will enjoy a walk through the Montclair Art Museum, offering a host of permanent and unique changing exhibits, concerts and films.
  • Visit the Montclair Historical Society. Several grand Victorian mansions, including the Israel Crane and Nathaniel Crane Houses are available for tours.
  • Formerly a private estate, Van Vleck House & Gardens is owned by The Montclair Foundation. These private gardens are open to the public daily free of charge.
  • Montclair State University is the home of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center
  • The New Jersey Jackals professional minor league baseball team plays at Yogi Berra Stadium – catch a home game before you depart!

Montclair Town Center is the traditional commercial hub of Montclair, running along Bloomfield Ave. for more than a mile from the Glen Ridge border to Mountain Avenue. Having fallen into disrepair since its heyday during the trolley car era, the town center is currently undergoing a revitalization effort to restore its earlier commercial splendor. For the tourist this means a cornucopia of shopping, antique shops, art galleries and bookshops. Antique lovers pop into Ivory Bird Antiques on Bloomfield, Garage Sale on Claremont and The Montclair Antique Center on Church Street. In addition to great shopping art galleries and bookshops pepper the town. Peek into the Oyo Gallery of African Art on Bloomfield and The Montclair Book Center on Glenridge. The Montclair Art Museum is a place for high art and student art. The museum houses an art school and serves as the town’s cultural hub. The home of works by Georgia O’Keefe, Thomas Eakins and Romare Bearden has recently undergone an expansion and renovation. For the true art history enthusiast, the museum features one of only five specialized art library collections in New Jersey with more than 14,000 books.

Continental Breakfast will be provided all three days.

Lunch will be provided all three days, including the Friday Buffet that has become a staple of the ELD annual event.

If you are looking to dine out, consider these local favorites:

  • Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant is a favorite for both vegans and meat lovers with its authentic Ethiopian food. All of our foods are prepared with imported Ethiopian spices blended daily.
  • Enter the world of artisanal wine at Amanti Vino.
