The Online Learning Consortium Takes Strategic Steps to Ensure Long-Term Sustainability

Boston, MA – December 20, 2024 – The Online Learning Consortium (OLC) announced today that it has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 protection as part of a strategic restructuring process.

“This proactive step will allow the organization to align its financial commitments with the changing landscape of higher education, ensuring its ability to continue serving members effectively,” said Jennifer Mathes, CEO.

The decision comes as many institutions face significant budget reductions, including cuts to travel and professional development funding. These challenges have directly impacted conference participation and other activities central to the association’s mission. By entering this restructuring process, the OLC will address contracts — specifically hotel commitments for conferences —while maintaining its focus on delivering high-value programs and resources to members.

“This  positions us to navigate today’s challenges and strengthen our organization for the future,” Mathes said. “Our commitment to supporting our members with exceptional resources, connections and professional development opportunities remains steadfast, and this process ensures we can continue to do so in a sustainable and impactful way.”

This process is designed to allow organizations to restructure their financial obligations while continuing day-to-day operations. Throughout this process, the OLC will remain focused on its mission to create community and knowledge around quality online, blended, and digital learning while driving innovation.

Members can expect the same high level of service and support throughout the restructuring. The organization will continue to host its major conference in the fall while also providing resources and delivering the programs that its members value most. The OLC Innovate 2025 conference will transition to a virtual experience, which Mathes said she expects to be a positive change for our attendees given financial constraints of many institutions and individuals.

“We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and support of our members,” added Jennifer Mathes. “Their engagement is essential, and together we will emerge from this process stronger and better equipped to fulfill our mission.”
