Innovation & Regulation:
Breakout Session 1
Can and should regulations drive innovative change in higher education?
As non-traditional pathways to degrees develop, should institutions other than universities, be allowed to award degrees and how can/should these pathways be regulated/controlled? What about financial aid, should students receive aid toward these non-traditional degrees?
Innovation & Regulation:
Breakout Session 2
Getting the word out: Tackling compliance as a way to catalyze institutional change.
The requirement of meeting accreditation standards can often help diminish the resistance to change on campus. The key to gaining buy-in from stakeholders is recognizing that accreditation is not “one size fits all” and issues of an institution’s unique mission and culture arise.
Innovation & Regulation:
Breakout Session 3
Intent versus neglect: Are good faith efforts enough for authorization and compliance?
With limited resources and personnel, are institutional good faith efforts sufficient to demonstrate recognition of and intent to comply with regulatory standards? Is it all or nothing? Is the intent of regulation to weed out or improve institutions?
Learning Analytics:
Breakout Session 1
How does the use of learning analytics impact shared governance, data privacy and ethics?
At what point should data not be collected or used by an institution? Do ethical boundaries exist in using this data when every click of a online course is captured and linked to an activity or outcome?
Learning Analytics:
Breakout Session 2
How can learning analytics help us with learning and teaching?
A student’s learning path or task completion time; for example, could be measured against that of an average learner. Can analytics provide us with greater options for teaching best practices if we have greater options for assessments?
Learning Analytics:
Breakout Session 3
Can learning analytics help us with future regulatory issues and compliance requirements?
When should data be used to show regulatory compliance and/or measuring student learning? If the credit hour serves as the basis for awarding financial aid, does measuring time-on-task in an online course help us understand student learning?
Competency-Based Education:
Breakout Session 1
Is competency-based education right for your institution?
More and more institutions are being pressured to demonstrate students have achieved specific learning outcomes and in some cases degree completion metrics are now tied to funding formulas. Are competency-based learning and assessment strategies right for your institution?
Competency-Based Education:
Breakout Session 2
Is competency-based education right for your students?
Do we know yet which students gain more from or are more successful in competency-based learning environments? How adaptable is competency-based learning in meeting changing student demographics?
Competency-Based Education:
Breakout Session 3
How can we prepare faculty and administrators for the future?
Anytime/anyplace content delivery and learning, just-in-time learning, mobile learning, personalized learning paths are replacing the traditional classroom and institution. How do we prepare and support our faculty and administration for this new frontier outside of the traditional classroom?
