Leading with Purpose: Building Bridges Between K–12 and Higher Ed
Dr. Lisa Hassler’s professional journey reflects a deep commitment to educational equity and meaningful change. With a background that spans elementary teaching and leadership roles in both public and private schools, she brings a nuanced perspective to today’s evolving learning environments. In addition to holding multiple advanced degrees and certifications, Dr. Hassler serves as an advisor, school board member, and peer reviewer—always centering student success in her work.
Embracing the OLC Community
Lisa first connected with OLC in 2022 through a surprising but meaningful moment: an encouraging email from renowned theorist Dr. Michael G. Moore. His praise of her dissertation on the Theory of Transactional Distance led to a recommendation to present at an OLC conference—and a welcome into a vibrant professional community that continues to shape her leadership journey.
Making an Impact through Volunteering
Volunteering with OLC began with a chance hallway conversation at Innovate 2023. After being invited by fellow volunteer Florence Williams to attend an engagement session, Lisa immediately recognized the power of the OLC volunteer network. Since then, she’s contributed as a field guide, proposal reviewer, panel moderator, K–12 Symposium planner, and Steering Committee member. Lisa also serves as a co-moderator of OLC’s planned K-12 Community Group on LinkedIn.
Rewards and Challenges
For Lisa, the most rewarding aspect of volunteering is the opportunity to connect, grow, and contribute within a vibrant community of forward-thinking educators. She’s especially grateful for the chance to help amplify K–12 voices in national conversations about digital learning—something she sees as both urgently needed and deeply fulfilling. While balancing time commitments can be a challenge, the sense of purpose and belonging she’s found through OLC makes every moment worth it.
Memorable Moments and Future Goals
Helping launch the inaugural K–12 Symposium at OLC Innovate 2024 stands out as a defining moment. Watching new educators find their place at OLC reaffirmed her belief in the importance of cross-sector dialogue. Looking ahead, Lisa’s goal remains clear: to support student success by empowering educators and to use her volunteer roles to help shape spaces where K–12 voices are heard and valued.
OLC Highlight
What sets OLC apart for Lisa is its intentional commitment to inclusion. “OLC listens and evolves,” she shares. “It’s one of the few national organizations truly working to integrate K–12 into digital learning conversations—and doing so with respect.”
A Call to Future Volunteers
Lisa encourages new volunteers to take the first step. “Start small if you need to—but start. Talk to people. Tag along. You’ll grow professionally and find a community that’s as welcoming as it is inspiring.”

From that first email to presenting, planning, and leading, Dr. Lisa Hassler’s path with OLC demonstrates how one moment of connection can lead to a meaningful and lasting impact.
